There are a number of possible reasons why your benefit may have stopped. Some of the most common reasons are now given, but this is not a complete list:
- If you moved and did not tell the Child Benefit Office, Child Benefit may stop if the Child Benefit Office are unable to contact you at the address you gave.
- If the Child Benefit Office writes to you and you do not reply to the enquiry, your payments may stop, as your whereabouts is not certain if you do not respond.
- If you have not told the Child Benefit Office that a young person is continuing in full-time further education or approved training your Child Benefit will stop, as Child Benefit can only be paid for a few weeks following the date you previously said that their education or training would end.
You will need to contact the Child Benefit Office if they are continuing in full-time further education or approved training. Your Child Benefit payments can then be restarted.
What happens if my payment date falls on a bank holiday?
If your payment is due on a bank holiday you will get this a little earlier than normal, usually the last working day before the bank holiday. Payments due after the bank holiday will be paid on your normal Monday or Tuesday pay date and not earlier.
How Child Benefit can help protect your basic state pension
Home Responsibilities Protection, known as HRP, is a scheme, not a benefit, which helps to protect your basic State Pension if you don't work, or if you work but your earnings are low and you are unable to pay enough National Insurance Contributions for State Pension purposes.
You get HRP automatically for each full tax year that you get Child Benefit for a child under 16. If you are entitled to HRP through Child Benefit for a child under the age of 6, your HRP will enable you to automatically build up entitlement to an additional State Pension through State Second Pension.
Only the person who has claimed and been awarded Child Benefit can get HRP. So it is very important to decide carefully who should claim Child Benefit and get HRP.
